Coorg in Karnataka

Coorg is one of the smallest parts of the large Karnataka state. Yet its peoples have played an extraordinary role in the military history of the country. They have produced some brilliant warriors - the British had a high regard for their physical strength. The men and women are tall and

muscular, graceful and despite their heroism on the battlefield in two world wars, they are a gentle and peaceful people. They are not only fearless but brainy too, assets greatly valued by the British and later by an independent India. Little wonder that Coorg has been described as "The Land of the Brave and Beautiful." India still reveres the memory of its army's two outstand-ing Commanders-in-Chief, General Cariappa and General Thimmaya. The latter stood up to the Chinese invaders of Indian soil but was handicapped by inadequate equipment and his men's unfamiliarity with a harsh, unfriendly terrain. Nevertheless he and his men acquitted themselves most honourably. The visionary Nehru in his ceaseless struggle against racism and racists made a most sagacious choice, when after General Cariappa's retirement, he appointed the tough old warrior as Commissioner to Australia. Cariappa's mission was clear - to expose the hypocrisy and idiocy of white supremacy in a country that had once belonged to the Native Australians and in reality was no whiter than the rest of Asia. Cariappa was declared persona non grata for his scathing attack on Australian racism and expelled. But he made his point and it was not long after that that Australia abandoned its vile all-white policy. Madikery, the capital of Coorg, is a pleasant well ordered town. From Raja's seat you can enjoy a unique treat - the rise and setting of the sun.
