Radio docu about Aus-Indian community issues bags UN award

Melbourne: A radio documentary about domestic violence and other related issues in the Australian Indian community has won a prestigious United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) media award. The documentary was awarded this year in the category of "increasing understanding and awareness of womens' rights and issues". “SBS Radio Punjabi Program's ‘The Enemy Within' explored a complex issue of domestic violence in Indian migrant communities. Manpreet Kaur Singh and Sacha Payne displayed exemplary skill in bringing forward a full picture of the experiences of women in violent relationships," the UNAA official statement said. The award winning documentary has also been named as a finalist at Australia's most coveted award for journalism - the Walkleys. The Walkley winners will be announced at the end of November. Singh is a well known radio broadcaster and producer for SBS Punjabi radio channel. He joined SBS Melbourne in 1993.
