Uber cab rape case: Indian Victim to sue firm in US

New York: A prominent New York-based lawyer has been hired to represent the 25-year-old woman allegedly raped by an Uber driver in New Delhi to sue the cab service provider in US courts. "I can confirm that I have been retained by the young lady who was raped by an Uber driver in Delhi, India, last December," Douglas Wigdor, who also represented the hotel maid who accused former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault in 2012, said in a statement. "WigdorLLP represents Indian woman raped by #Uber driver in Delhi. Filing case in US," a tweet by Wigdor's law firm said. Wigdor said he will use "all of our resources" to bring justice to his client and ensure those responsible are brought to book so that such incidents are not repeated.

Wigdor said he had met "extensively" with the woman and her family while in Delhi after the incident on December 5. "I can only compliment them for their bravery and fortitude during this very difficult time," he said. "We will use all of our resources to vindicate my client's rights, hold those responsible for their actions and ensure that this doesn't happen again," he said. According to a report in The Guardian, Wigdor further said he was looking at the possibility of asking a US court to exercise jurisdiction in the case since Uber's conduct was based on company policy made in the US. He said there was a substantial body of case law to suggest the court would consider doing so, the Guardian report added. A Delhi court on Tuesday framed charges against Shiv Kumar Yadav for alleged rape and kidnapping.
